Crinum asiaticum var. Japonicum

Crinum asiaticum var. Japonicum (Baker) is a native of Japan, China, Korea, India, and Malysia, where it is found growing in marshes and sand dunes.   Crinum asiaticum var Japonicum is a smaller variety of crinum asiaticum.

This crinum produces upright leaves and a leek-like basal stump.   Offsets and viable seeds are produced in this garden.

While a tropical variety, this crinum is hardy and thrives in Zone 8B in well drained, sandy soil if planted in a protected area and mulched with bark mulch.   All foliage is frozen back in the winter, but recovers each spring.   This freezing inhibits flower production some years, but the foliage is distinctive and worthy of inclusion in the garden.
