Crinum Hardyi (Lehmiller)

Crinum hardyi (Lehmiller) is a native of Madagascar, where it is found growing near the banks of rivers and temporary streams.   The type bulb was collected 89 km south of Miandrivaz, adjacent to a tributary of the Tsirbihina River on November 11, 1996.   It was first described by Lehmiller, Herbertia 58, IBS, 2003.   Crinum hardyi is a member of the Subgenus Crinum (Ex Platyaster) Forms.

This bulb was one of two bulbs acquired in 2005.   Offsets have not been observed, but viable seeds were produced in each of the past three years in this garden.

This crinum variety is hardy and thrives in Zone 8B in well drained sandy soil.   All foliage is frozen back in the winter, but recovers each spring.
